Artist Statement

A sculpture offers an artist the opportunity to reshape the fabric of the world around them, to crease it in ways which reveal this primal desire: To present our lives, obsessions and fears onto the unborn bodies of our own work. Like us, sculptures are limited by their form, but it is this physical limitation which opens the doors of understanding to the subleties hidden inside shape: The seeds embedded into every curve which grow for each person a different tree...

About

Florian Okwu’s sculptures call to ancient relics, imagined deities, and husks of once living beings: Testaments to mortality, forgotten civilizations, and the passing of time. He uses his work to explore the human condition, as well as existence itself: Expressed through his use of impermanent materials, corporeality, and a stylistic language which bridges modern and fictional futures with that of craftspeople & designers from prehistory and beyond.

Born from a vocabulary of thematic impulses, Florian’s aesthetic decisions are shaped by geometric and anthropological fascinations, symmetry, fragility, light-play, and references to the divine. With them, he develops an ecosystem of personal symbols through which he physicializes his imagination, opening the doors of our world to the creatures and structures contained inside his mind. He finds, through this process, a deep respect and attunement to his humanity: Not only do his sculptures act as experimental sandboxes and milestones of his life, but also as documentations of his attempts to explore and deepen his relationship with human instinct. Especially, this innate drive to ornamentalize, worship, and imprint our humanity onto the materials of a chaotic world.

These are the urges which inspire us to seek meaning, discover purpose, create new languages, and share the stories of our lives. Florian’s work invites these instincts: A rudimentary and curious self, conjured from the shedding of our habitual fog. Above all, Florian creates work which makes him proud: Pieces which preserve his dedication to craft and the continuation of carving culture.

Florian is also the owner of okflo, a sculptural studio through which he commercializes his fine art, and explores alternate materials as well as smaller-scale handmade collections and creatures.
